ARAB CAR manufacturers must coordinate their efforts towards technology transfer, minister of industry and technological development, Mustafa El-Rifa'i, said last week.

El-Rifa'i was inaugurating the Second Arab International Automotive and Feeding Industries Conference (Formula 2000), which was organised by the Arab Organisation for Technological Development. Shaimaa Labib was there.
Those attending the exhibit urged more efforts to consolidate the Arab car production industry, with figures showing that out of a global production of 54.6 million cars in 1999, Arab manufacturers produced only 110,000 cars, which does not meet the regional demand, assessed at 930,000 cars annually.
El-Rifa'i called upon Egyptian and Arab businessmen to establish an Arab holding company for the purpose for manufacturing cars in the Arab region in addition to marketing them in the Arab and international markets.
"The establishment of this holding company has to be coupled with the formation of an Arab Technological Center for Car Manufacturing. The purpose of this center is to train and qualify technicians who then will be assigned with jobs," El-Rifa'i said.
