A TIMELY OPENING: A week before the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan the Supreme Council for Antiquities (SCA) unveiled restoration work on the mosques of Al-Ghouri and Al-Kekhya. The work, costing LE25 million, has occupied experts for more than a decade.
Restoration of the 18th century Ottoman Al-Kekhya Mosque on Al-Gomhouriya street -- pictured -- concentrated on revamping the courtyard as well as the interior, which boasts much remarkable woodwork, not least the ornately carved ceiling and doors.
"All original features were retained," said SCA secretary-general Gaballah Ali Gaballah at the opening ceremony attended by Prime Minister Atef Ebeid and Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni.
