PROTECTING PRECIOUS WATER: At a meeting of UNESCO's World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) in Paris on Monday, Mrs Suzanne Mubarak proposed that Egypt be given the headquarters of a research centre for ethical management of fresh water resources in Africa and the Middle East.

"Egypt's geographical location is ideal for such a centre. The country possesses a great deal of expertise in water management and distribution and its Irrigation Ministry has a long history of work in developing and managing the Nile," said Mrs Mubarak.

COMEST was created in 1998 to provide an intellectual forum for the exchange of ideas and experience on the ethical aspect of water management. In January 1999, Mrs Mubarak was named by UNESCO's director-general as a member of the commission.

Mrs Mubarak drew attention to Egypt's efforts to reduce water pollution and to the existence of an Egyptian water resources centre focusing on research and training.

The Earl of Selborne, president of the working group on use of fresh water resources, a branch of COMEST, responded to Mrs Mubarak's proposal by acknowledging that Egypt has thousands of years of experience regarding water-related problems. There is no other country that surpasses Egypt in that respect," he commented.
