New Year wishes

Naguib Mahfouz

The first wish for the new year is that of reaching a just peace that would save the Palestinians. It seems the opportunity for such a peace is available now that the American President Bill Clinton has departed the White House. What I am thinking of -- indeed, hoping for -- is not so much a resolution of the conflict as the creation of a general framework in which the goals of peace can be pursued by both parties concerned.

On the local plain, my most fervent wish concerns the removal of economic obstacles that stand in the way of comprehensive development. Such development, as I envision it, would be capable of influencing political, social and cultural as well as economic life.

In this respect, however, as in many others, local and regional go together: war and peace have wide-ranging implications, and the just peace I have referred to would certainly help make comprehensive development possible. In this sense, therefore, it is practically the same wish expressed in two different ways.

All my wishes concern public issues. At the personal level, there are no more wishes to be had.

Based on an interview by Mohamed Salmawy.
