Pack of Cards2000 WAVES good-bye, dears, leaving good and bad behind, and noisily heralding a new age. Well -- perhaps not as noisily as Jean-Michel Jarre's Twelve Dreams of the Sun, which opened the millennium with a (culturally varied, internationally proportioned and socially sophisticated) bang: this year, by contrast, simpler but no less joyful celebrations rule. Party hats, café outings and private apartment or hotel celebrations were by far the most widespread signs of festivity in evidence on New Year's eve, an occasion that engaged the hearts and minds of all the Muslims and Christians whose feast days more or less coincided with the advent of 2001. And indeed, celebratory preparations underway, that very special evening was party and performance galore, dears, often not for the faint hearted. Balloons, laser lights, season's greetings and endless, endless music: even strolling down the Corniche to enjoy the chilly night air between parties was pleasant enough. Cars swooshed by, and it was like being in a beautiful romantic film of not so long ago, fireworks in the background.

Every so often, my pets, we are reminded of Verdi's tragic masterpiece Aida, set in the splendour of ancient Egypt. This year, Aida 2001, lasting from 12 to 17 October at the Great Pyramids, will coincide with the worldwide commemoration of the centennial anniversary of Verdi's death (1901-2001). I could hardly contain my excitement when I heard that Italian director Pier Luigi Pizzi was in Cairo to discuss with the Opera House the possibility of directing this year's show. He visited the site accompanied by a committee from the Opera including the head of its Artistic House, Abdel-Moneim Kamel, and head of executive production for Aida, Hassan Kami. Pizzi suggested a new stage that would suit the authentic Pharaonic ambiance of the setting. After inquiring about preparations related to costumes, accessories, statues, choirs and ballet dancers, Pizzi expressed his complete satisfaction with the Opera House's facilities and his willingness to produce a globally successful show.

Always a lover of art, I was thrilled to discover that the renovation of Al-Gomhouriya Theatre in Abdin is nearing completion. It is expected to resume its artistic activity early this month. It was partly redone twice before, once in 1979 when it was expected to function as the old opera house, and another time in 1995. I am told that this recent revival is comprehensive, however its technical aspect concerns sound effects, machinery, control rooms, the stage, chairs, lavatories and management. Theatre director Magdi Abdel-Moneim said these steps were implemented with a limited budget. "Our chief goal is to renovate the theatre with its rich historical background, preserving its classically designed interior," he said. He has also tried to solve the parking problem (how successfully, we will soon know).
In 1926, this theatre was known as the Royal Cinema; it is here that King Fouad attended the première of Mohamed Abdel-Wahab's blockbuster The White Rose. It is only in 1961 that it was converted into a theatre and renamed Al-Gomhouriya |
In recognition of his exceptional archaeological achievements, my dear friend Zahi Hawass, director-general of the Giza Plateau and Bahariya Oasis, has been awarded a crystal obelisk by the Association of Egyptian-American Scholars (AEAS) as distinguished scientist of the year 2000.
The Association's board members honoured Zahi for his devotion to the protection and preservation of Ancient Egyptian monuments as well as his major discoveries in Alexandria and Abu Simbel. The most momentous among these, of course, is the Valley of the Golden Mummies in Bahariya Oasis, and the Pyramid Builders' cemetery in Giza. I am sure that you must be familiar with his latest books, Silent Image (women in Ancient Egypt) and Valley of the Golden Mummies. The AEAS banquet took place at the Diplomatic Club on 30 December, and the ceremony was enriched by a slide show of some of Zahi's finds. Ahmed Zuweil, Farouq El-Baz and Ismail Serag El-Din are the only three Egyptians to have won the AEAS award. This is the second time that Zahi has been honoured this year. You may remember that a few months ago he was granted the American Academy of Achievements' Golden Plate, one of the most prestigious international awards. |
Once again, Le Méridien Heliopolis has been chosen to serve as the backdrop for an Egyptian production. This time it will feature in the film Qasaqis Al-Ushaq (Lovers' Clippings), starring Hussein Fahmy and Nabila Ebeid, with a screenplay by Wahid Hamed. The action will take you to the diplomatic suite, Le 51 and Le Barracuda Discotheque, my dear friend Nihal Zamzam, marketing and communications manager, has confided.

Last week, our dear colleague, Al-Ahram's general manager in the advertising department Mohamed Youssef, had the great joy of giving away one of his twin daughters, the ravishing Doaa, who was married to Engineer Marwan Maghawri Shahin. Marwan, who teaches at the Faculty of Engineering, is the son of counselor Maghawri Mohamed Shahin. The marriage was performed by the Grand Mufti of the Republic, Dr Nasr Farid Wassel; the reception took place at the Shepheard's Hotel and was attended by Mustafa Kamal Helmi, head of the Shura Council and president of the Supreme Press Council, Mustafa Kamel, governor of Port Said, as well as many distinguished members of Al-Ahram Organisation, famous jurists and journalists and the families of the bride and groom. From what I hear, the bride's twin sister, our dear colleague Eman, was for the occasion even more gorgeous than she usually is.
