More Arabic titles
Sir-I would like to express my admiration for your book supplement and, especially, the online edition of Al-Ahram Weekly, which makes available issues that do not reach the news stands. Last month's issue of your supplement was especially ingratiating. As I browsed through the various headlines, however, extending my search to previous issues of the supplement, I felt I came upon too many English books, too few from the Arab World. There are always enough Arabic titles to capture my interest and cater to my passion for the literary life of the Arab World, acquired during my extended stay in the region during the mid-1970s.
As an English-language publication from Cairo, however, perhaps Al-Ahram Weekly's book supplement should not waste too much space on books published originally in European languages. As the English-speaker's window onto a literary world that would otherwise remain inaccessible, one -- I think rightly -- expects the book supplement's principal concern to be with Arabic literature from all over the Arab World, not just from Egypt. Arabic titles from outside Egypt are equally valuable and commentary on them is perhaps even less available in this part of the world. Yet the book supplement runs reviews of English, French and German titles and ignores books published in other parts of the Arab World.
It is my hope that this point will be taken into account in future issues. And I look forward to reading your supplements.
