Out of the classroom

MRS SUZANNE Mubarak opened the fifth University Students Week festival on Saturday, officially launching a week of sports competitions and cultural and social activities. This year's celebration, hosted by Al-Minya University, will host some 6,000 students from universities and higher institutes across the country for the event.

Minister of Higher Education Moufid Shehab said that participating students will have a chance to use their talents and skills, developed at their respective colleges and universities. Extra-curricular activities have been given support and encouragement by the government -- a reflection of President Hosni Mubarak's emphasis on giving the nation's youth a more rounded education, Shehab said.

"A student cannot acquire a well-rounded university education by just excelling in classes and labs. He also has to distinguish himself in the field, in debates and on-stage -- so that we will have a generation of modern graduates who are prepared to effectively take part in society's rapid advance and keep up with the changing pace of global development," Shehab said.

Mrs Mubarak also opened the new buildings and facilities at Al-Minya University. Built at a cost of LE76 million, the new additions include the new Suzanne Mubarak Theatre, which seats 2,000, two medium-sized theatres housing 850 seats each, 16 small theatres and a main restaurant serving 10,000 meals daily. An indoor sports hall with a 5,000-seat capacity, 10 outdoor artificial-grass playgrounds, an Olympic-sized pool, a state-of-the-art squash complex and a 25,000 capacity stadium were also inaugurated by Mrs Mubarak.

On Sunday, Mrs Mubarak attended the celebration held at the Cairo International Conference Centre to distribute the Third International Nile Children's Song Festival awards.
