OPENING On 14 February, the American University in Cairo's Sony Gallery for Photography offers visual contact with the Al-Aqsa Intifada, fresh from the eye of the storm. American photographer Thomas Hartwell and Enric Marti, from Spain, give us a jarring glimpse of the line of fire with images taken in Gaza directly after the flare-up of the Intifada throughout Palestine in late September 2000.

The two photojournalists are intimately familiar with the Arab World: Hartwell has lived in Cairo since 1979 and Marti since 1995. Both share feelings of injustice and outrage regarding the discrimination and violence suffered by Palestinians in Gaza and elsewhere in the occupied territories. The exhibition is an exercise in fragile harmony, delving beyond the surface of the Intifada to poignantly capture scenes from everyday life imposed on the tragically grotesque. Hartwell and Marti worked on the same scenes over and over, approaching them from different angles and, in their effort to make a positive, life-affirming statement, looking for signs of vitality and rebirth.

Entitled "Peace that Kills", the exhibition reflects ironically on the political circumstances of the Intifada and the brutal oppression of civilians practiced by Israel in the name of peace -- testimony to the Sony Gallery's long-standing interest in politics and culture. The Intifada emerges in these pictures as a live experience, not merely an item on the nine o'clock news.

The exhibition will be inaugurated at a ceremony attended by Palestinian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nabil Shaath and Volkhard Windfuhr, bureau chief of Der Spiegel and chairman of the Foreign Press Association.
