Computers for all
ACITEX, the ninth Al-Ahram Computer and Information Technology Exhibition, was held last week at the Cairo International Conference Centre in Nasr City, reports Eman Youssef. With the participation of 150 companies, the exhibition was inaugurated by Ahmed Nazif, minister of communication and information technology. The exhibition was also attended by Ali Ghoneim, deputy chairman and general manager of Al-Ahram Organisation, Hassan Hamdi, general manager of Al-Ahram's advertising department, Medhat Mansour, general manager of Pyramids Advertising Agency and Mohamed Youssef Habib, general manager for Al-Ahram's classified advertisements.
Nazif told Al-Ahram Weekly that investment in Egypt by software companies increased from LE290 million in 1999 to LE620 million in 2000.
Organisations from two European countries participated in the exhibition. At ACITEX for the second time, Italy's SMAU Information Technology exhibition was promoted by Maura Gritti, international sales and marketing director of SMAU, who said the 2001 exhibition will be held in Milan in October. Germany was also represented at the event plugging its CeBIT 2001 exhibit which will be held in March in Hanover.
The four-day exhibition attracted a crowd eager to snap up state-of-the-art technology at bargain prices. But visitors found that prices were beyond the reach of those with average incomes and university students.
Windows 98 was sold for LE340 and Windows 2000 was sold for LE350.
Prices for IBM-compatible PCs ranged from LE3,000 to LE10,000 while Apple models were sold for LE4,000 to LE8,000. Hussein Ghorab, the general manager of Al-Wadi Computer Services, attributed the high prices to the sales tax on computers, as well as customs tariffs which range from 5 to 30 per cent on software programmes.
