Necessary truths
![]()
Ariel Sharon's rise to power, for us, is a positive development -- or at least there is a positive side to it: that we are now forced to face the dire circumstances head on, as it were, whereas before we could only approach the situation through the mediation of various factors, up to and including Israeli deception. At least Sharon is clear about his aims, and this might drive us to mobilise and prepare for the great challenges of nations that create their history. The bitter truth has been forced on us and there is no longer any room for false hope.
The possibility of a resolution is determined not by individual people's desires, but by objective circumstances; and this is why we have to deal with these circumstances, to try and exploit them for our benefit. If we eventually reach a resolution, then, it will be real and effective. But if we keep hiding behind various facades, whatever resolution we might reach will not hold water. This is what happened with another, fiercer Likud leader, Menachem Begin, when circumstances made the October War a necessity, and created a situation in which Begin was forced to accept a resolution with Egypt. I do not think it impossible that the Intifada, and Western misgivings about Sharon, will give rise to a similar conclusion.
Based on an interview by Mohamed Salmawy.
