Around the galleries
Ongoing until 2 March at the Picasso Gallery, Zamalek, Bahrain's up-and-coming artist Fatima Fakhro charts the breadths and depths of a pioneering neo-surrealist project. The paintings on display reveal a profound concern with woman as both cultural symbol and psychological-emotional entity. Swirling thick brush strokes, condensed into intimidating formations on the canvas, suggest a dimension of fear. Like a sudden, crisp sound emerging out of a long and troubled silence, each of Fakhro's motifs -- notably her disembodied female faces -- assumes an almost political edge, yet there is enough composure there to render these paintings a peaceful and meditative viewing experience. Fakhro's work emerges directly from her ethnic environment, yet she explores Western notions of psychoanalysis and reveals the female psyche in reinvigorating ways. Fakhro is a true pioneer.
