Cairo International Biennale

THIS Wednesday the eighth round of the Cairo International Biennale opened on a surprisingly quiet note. Coinciding with the Nitaq Festival and the London Nomad Exhibition, the Biennale kick-started an exceptionally rich spring season for the plastic arts -- perhaps the most extensive and cosmopolitan to date. Under the directorship of Ahmed Fouad Selim, general commissar of the biennale, and Reda Abdel-Salam, commissar of the Egyptian pavilion, the event will end on 16 December at the Cairo Opera House Small Hall.

While the second, bigger round of the Nitaq Festival covers the downtown area almost entirely, the Biennale presides over most of Gezira and Zamalek, its spacious venues comprising the Opera House Gallery, the Museum of Modern Arts and the Palace of Arts within the Opera House grounds, and the Centre of Arts (Akhenaton Halls) and the Gezira Arts Centre outside of it.

The Biennale alone will put art lovers in contact with some 900 pieces -- painting, sculpture, installation and more -- by 221 artists from 51 countries. It has also brought a number of interesting artists to the foreground by naming them guests of honour: Fabrizzio Plessi (exhibiting at the Centre of Arts) and Consagra (Palace of arts) from Italy, George Bahgory (Palace of Arts) and Saleh Reda (Museum of Modern Art) from Egypt, Peter Weilbell (Gezira Arts Centre) from Austria and Carl Henning Pederasen (Palace of Arts) from Denmark. The New York-based painter Ahmed Mursi is the only Egyptian member of the jury.
