ON THE SIDELINES of the Arab League meeting of foreign ministers, President Hosni Mubarak met with the league's secretary-general, Esmat Abdel-Meguid, and a number of top diplomats from Arab countries on Sunday.
Abdel-Meguid reported to Mubarak on the preparations being made for the Arab summit which will be held on 27-28 March in Amman, Jordan. Abdel-Meguid will step down as secretary-general during the summit, to be replaced by Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa.
During a meeting with Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdul-Ilah Al-Khatib, Mubarak received an official invitation from King Abdullah to attend the summit.
Iraq's Foreign Minister Mohamed Said Al-Sahaf also conveyed a verbal message from President Saddam Hussein to Mubarak, saying Baghdad was optimistic regarding recent developments in bilateral ties. Egypt and Iraq signed a free-trade agreement last month as part of efforts to put in place the building blocks of a common Arab market. Al-Sahaf also discussed the Arab summit's agenda, saying Iraq expected little disagreement among leaders on inter-Arab cooperation. "There is no such thing as an Iraqi camp and a Gulf camp," Al-Sahaf told reporters, referring to the divisions among Arab countries over Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait. "We all want to work for joint Arab action," he said.
Meanwhile, Tunisian President Zeine Al-Abidine Bin Ali sent a message to Mubarak, delivered by Foreign Minister Habib Bin Yahia, reviewing bilateral ties and the upcoming Arab summit.
