Caretakers of the future
ON TUESDAY, Mrs Suzanne Mubarak opened the National Council for Women's (NCW) second annual women's conference, entitled "The Egyptian Woman and the National Plan 2002-2007."
The two-day conference at the Cairo International Conference Centre aimed at setting the broad lines of the national plan for women's advancement and integrating it within the government's overall five-year economic and social plan.
In her opening-session address, Mrs Mubarak pointed out that the conference is a continuation of the valuable work begun during the first conference, held one year ago. She reminded the audience of the clear message that President Hosni Mubarak gave to members of that conference -- and to the nation as a whole -- last year: the importance of the NCW's mandate in pushing forward the nation's development process.
"We are at a new stage of national effort, a stage that depends on advancing men and women alike," Mrs Mubarak said. "It has become common knowledge that the wealth of nations is no longer measured only by what natural resources they own, but also by the human capabilities they possess."
The opening session also featured speeches by Prime Minister Atef Ebeid and NCW Secretary-General Mervat Tallawi. It was followed by two days of workshops, after which the conference recommendations were announced at the closing session.
Two main issues were discussed. The first was a report on the state of Egyptian women from 1952 to date, the first of its kind. Destined to become an important reference for studying the conditions of women in Egypt, it will be updated by annual revisions and additions. The second were the broad lines of the national plan for the advancement of women in Egypt, which were drawn up jointly by national planning experts from relevant NCW committees, the United Nations Development Programme, the Ministry of Planning and other ministries.
The conference precedes Egyptian Women's Day, celebrated on 16 March.
