Decisions, decisions

The Palestinian issue will no doubt be the top priority at the next Arab summit in which presidents and monarchs will gather -- a meeting we all eagerly anticipate. But what will they do? We have already bypassed the fund-raising phase of the last Arab summit, when it turned out that only a tiny portion of the millions of dollars put aside for the Palestinians actually reached them, undoubtedly due to bureaucratic complications that will be sorted out in time. But this is not the issue.
Today, we find ourselves in a difficult situation; funds alone will no longer do. The Intifada is more vital than ever following the advent of an Israeli government that emanates violence, takes the flimsiest pretexts (or even none at all) to strike at the Palestinians, lying in wait for them and murdering them every day. Nor has the new American administration stated its position clearly until now, which means that the features of the next phase are still indistinct. Part of the problem is that the Arab side, too, has yet to formulate and articulate a clear perspective on the Palestinian issue. Surely that will be the principal task of the next Arab summit -- and one can only hope that it will be accomplished satisfactorily. Based on an interview by Mohamed Salmawy.
