Zeinab Zaza's recent exhibition at the Cairo Atelier featured paintings of everyday scenes which the artist transformed into symbolist visions. Zaza imbues popular phenomena with a striking simplicity, rendering simple, flowing forms in striking combinations of colours, restricting herself to a very basic palette. This invests everyday visual elements with a curious weight, so that a joyfully observed palm tree or popular carnival becomes the sign of a much greater matrix of cultural relations.
