HEWLETT-PACKARD opened its first Egypt branch recently, signalling what HP Egypt General Manager Rudi Richter calls a demonstration of the company's "long-term commitment to this fast-growing market." The new office is charged with enlarging the market share of HP's core product lines, like personal computers, servers and storage, software and other e-services. The Cairo office is affiliated to the HP Middle East regional headquarters in Dubai.Sex solicitation on-line
IN THE first ruling of its kind, a Cairo criminal court last month sentenced two Egyptians, a computer engineer and an accountant, to jail terms of 15 months and three months respectively for soliciting sex over the Internet. The two had committed the "scandalous act" of advertising their sexual services on-line. The court explained the harsh sentences as a warning to other young people thinking of following suit.Islamic search engine
SPECIALISATION flourishes on the Net, so it is not surprising that the creators of Hamza, the first Islamic search engine, saw a market for their services. Launched on 1 March, the site's "About Us" section says that it is dedicated to helping Muslims and non-Muslims "easily find Islamic information on the Internet." The site's webcrawler, Hiba, prowls the Internet and its index of submitted Islamic Web sites, which is divided into two sections: "Islamic Information" and "The Web."The first section is an index of the top Islamic Web sites offering helpful information, including Islaam.com, IslamZine.com, ViewIslam.com and the like. The second section is an index of other sites found on the Internet with an Islamic bent. Hamza has over 15,000 pages catalogued and advanced search capabilities, making this a valuable resource.
