Christian concerns

By Laila Takla*

Laila Takla I am not upset when "visitors" come to Egypt to learn more about democracy, human rights and religious tolerance, as long as it is clear they are not "inspectors." Egypt's image abroad is often far from the truth, and such visits help rectify it. Besides, sometimes they help visitors see the skeletons in their own closets. It is noble to be interested in the welfare of other people, and the Washington group visiting Egypt has said its aim is dialogue and sharing concerns. I have a few concerns of my own, however. First, I fear that they are not worried about Christians in Palestine. Recently two Christian villages were bombed by a state supported by Congress. No word from Washington. Second, just as the teachings of Islam are distorted by Islamists, so are the teachings of Christ by decisions Washington makes. Biased resolutions do not help Christianity (which can be served in Washington, after all). I consider Al-Kosheh not merely a tragedy for Christians but a national disaster, rejected by all Egyptians. It is, however, the exception, not the rule. True, fundamentalist behaviour is still a problem; but both government and civil society are trying to solve it. A practical, positive way of expressing concern would be to take a genuine interest in our socio-economic development, since poverty is an incubator of violence and intolerance. I am speaking here of investment, partnership and of course objective reports about stability and religious freedom in Egypt. Another way would be to stop supporting extremist regimes (remember Afghanistan?) and to support our efforts for a just, fair and permanent peace, so that we can concentrate on the welfare of all those living in Egypt. That is the true spirit of Christianity.
