Books on environment
Sir- Notwithstanding the range and quality of the reviews included in each issue of Al-Ahram Weekly's Book Supplement, one feels compelled to note the absence of reviews of books with an environmental focus -- particularly since the environment has come to be among the most important topics of our times. This is clearly reflected in the attention paid to it by the government and the media, but also in the almost instant transformation of many people into staunch environmentalists. One such book, sponsored by the Tourism Development Authority, was the work of Rafiq Khalil and Dina Ali, a young Egyptian couple who have made the environment their mission. Entitled Egypt's Natural Heritage, it comprises the authors' account of their journeys around various Egyptian deserts since they were married in 1987. As a catalyst for increased tourism and a warning against ongoing environmental damage, it is of immense value. Containing a large number of excellent photographs, the book sums up the geography and geology, flora and fauna of a broad range of little-discovered places -- treasures the upkeep of which is the responsibility of every Egyptian. It demonstrates clearly how environmental research can be translated into delightful entertainment.
Perhaps the Book Supplement has adopted a narrowly literary approach. Judging by both Al-Ahram Weekly's environmental coverage and the role played by nature and the environment more and more in Egyptians' lives, one might safely conclude, I think, that Weekly readers would be interested in books of this kind. May the environment rise on your list of priorities.
