UN call

PALESTINIAN UN observer Nasser Al-Kidwa has urged the UN Security Council to take action to end Israel's military campaign and provide protection for the Palestinian people.

In a letter delivered on Tuesday and addressed to Britain's UN Ambassador Jeremy Greenstock, the current council president, Al-Kidwa said, "The council should not remain paralysed as it watches the ongoing tragedy that threatens the whole region and endangers international peace and security." He accused Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his government of "war crimes and state terrorism."

Iraq plea

EGYPT and Kuwait have called on Iraq to show "good intentions" and end all actions that threaten Kuwait and increase tension in the Gulf region.

In a statement released on Tuesday after meetings of the Egyptian-Kuwaiti supreme joint committee, both countries urged the lifting of the 1990 UN-sponsored sanctions. The statement also urged Iraq to "affirm its commitment and respect for the security, sovereignty and independence of Kuwait."

The committee meetings were co-chaired by Kuwait Foreign Minister Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah and his Egyptian counterpart Amr Moussa. They were attended by Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Ebeid who was visiting Kuwait.
