Pack of CardsI was bursting with excitement as I watched my distinguished and charming friend Mustafa El-Feki receive the Austrian Grand Decoration of Honour with Sash last week, presented by Austrian Minister of Economy and Labour Martin Bartenstein.
My cherubs, I know exactly what he means. The enchanting El-Feki played a pivotal role in the public relations and information campaign "Going to Egypt," which aimed to raise awareness of Egypt's emerging market among the business community in Austria and to promote investment in Egypt. He also achieved a feat by bringing over Pharaonic and Islamic Egypt exhibitions, which drew tens of thousands of eager and curious visitors in Vienna. |

And how was your Shamm Al-Nessim, darlings? My dear friend George Bahgory apparently had a splendid time felucca-cruising on the Nile, although, if I trust his impressions sketched as he took in the breeze on that lovely day, the river must have been a teensy weensy bit too crowded for his liking. Anyway, Bahgory, who is always complaining that Cairo lacks green spaces to rest his eyes on, did not seem particularly fazed by the throngs, and told us all that he had thoroughly enjoyed his little foray as well as the traditional fisikh that went with it.

Am I looking forward to tomorrow's concert at the Opera House! This concert is organised by the Kumho Cultural Foundation, in cooperation with the Opera House, of course, and will feature a classical music performance by famous pianist Ramzi Yassa and the internationally acclaimed Kumho Asiana String Quartet in a selection of pieces by Mozart and Schubert. Well, darlings, nothing like an evening at the opera house to soothe the nerves and raise the spirits as my grandmother used to say.

If music is not your thing, however, you could consider attending the Book and Author Reception of the American University in Cairo Press, hosted by its director Mark Linz celebrating the publication of Legends of the House of the Cretan Woman (Beit Al-Kritliya) which was written by R G "John" Gayer-Anderson when he was living in what is now better known as the Gayer-Anderson Museum. This is of course where the event will take place, and if you have not already visited this most unusual house this will provide you with a unique chance to see it in its (partly) restored state. Moreover, I was told by my dear friend AUC Press Promotion Manager Nabila Aql that at least a few of the contributors to another already famous AUC Press publication, The Cairo Heritage, edited by Doris Behrens-Abouseif, will be there. Isn't that exciting?

This week, dears, the Ahmed Shawqi Museum presents us with a delightful surprise. My dear colleague Nagwa El-Ashri, who regularly comments on other people's work in the Weekly, is finally exhibiting her own paintings -- 62 of them, dears, believe it or not. Nagwa works in many media and the present offering showcases the range of her achievement through the years.
To be inaugurated -- at 7pm, on Sunday -- by Chairman of the Board of Al-Ahram Organisation and Editor-in-Chief of Al-Ahram Ibrahim Nafie, the opening will be attended by two stellar Ministry of Culture officials: Ahmed Nawwar, head of the Department of Plastic Arts, and Hamdi Shehata, head of the Department of Museums and Galleries. Need I add that it is not an occasion to be missed? |
