Defending the land
BEFORE embarking on his European tour on Tuesday, President Hosni Mubarak visited the War Memorial at Nasr City in remembrance of Egypt's fallen soldiers. The president made a radio and television broadcast to the nation on the 19th Sinai Day after placing wreaths of flowers on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the grave of President Anwar El-Sadat.
In his address celebrating the 1982 liberation of Sinai from Israeli occupation, the president said that the Egyptian people "will continue to protect and defend their territory against any invader." He reminded his listeners that more than 100,000 "martyrs" had died defending their country and many more were ready to take their place.
He described Israel's 1967-1982 occupation of the Sinai peninsula as a "hateful nightmare," and recalled Egypt's "joy of reaping the fruits of the great 1973 victory." Mubarak's carefully worded address came at a time when tensions between Cairo and Tel Aviv continue to rise, following Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's election victory in February.
