Sosostris

Pack of Cards

By Madame Sosostris

* Cairo my darlings is a-buzz with rumours of the events which are about to take place during the beautiful month of May. The French, ever so romantic have chosen this lovely time to express their love of Cairo, launching a month-long extravaganza which they simply called Les

Français aiment Le Caire (as I was already telling you last week) to demonstrate to us, ungrateful Cairenes, that the small daily inconveniences that so often mar the great picture, are but a small price to pay when one is privileged enough to live in such a splendid historical setting. Today my darlings, if you have awaken early (as I assume you have) and read Al-Ahram Weekly with your coffee (as you should), you will notice that there will be very exciting events taking place at the new Souq Al-Fustat in Old Cairo starting 11.30am. That, however, is only part of it, as you will discover by turning to our Listings (p.14) where you will find that every day this week will bring something new and exciting. Arts, crafts, music, exhibitions and conferences are vying for your attention. I am sure that you will want to rediscover Cairo as seen through the eyes of experts who love our city and have taken the trouble to present its many facets in an irresistible way. I must confess dears that I myself was too impatient to wait and went in search of the two magnificent books that will be launched during the festivities. What treasures! I really could not resist sharing them with my nearest and dearest and this is why I decided to offer you a sample of the rare images that they contain. You will not begin to know how fascinating it is to read about the history of Umm Al-Duniya from the beginning of times practically, till today.

* To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Spanish novelist Leopoldo Alas Clar’n's death, the Cervantes Institute (Spanish Cultural Centre in Cairo) will organise a lecture by the professor of Spanish at Al-Azhar University Sabri Mohamed El-Touhami, on 14 May. El-Touhami will present a critical study on one of Clar’n's works titled The So-called Teresa. My dear friend Antonio Gil de Carrasco, director of the Cervantes Institute was telling me that the lecture is part of a series which will be given by specialists in Spanish studies as a means of reinforcing the academic and scientific exchange between Egyptian academics and their Spanish counterparts.

* And since art is not restricted to children of course, I thought I should point out that a very interesting exhibition of paintings by Corinne Güdemann is opening on 9 May at the Cairo Berlin Gallery. It is called Ich Und Die Andere which, although my German is less than functional I took to mean "I and the others".

* Darlings I do know that we all think that we have been blessed with gifted children but even the most clever among them do need guidance to develop their talents. This is why if you have a gifted child who is into things artistic, and if he/she have managed to amaze you with his/her use of colouring pencils, don't hesitate, head for Shadicor Gallery in Heliopolis where a workshop for children aged six to 12 will be held starting 3 May. It will be organised under the supervision of artist and manager of the gallery Adel Sabet. This year, the workshop will also help handicapped children in learning how to draw by using charcoal, oil and water colours.

*US Ambassador Daniel Kurtzer visited the Bulaq Social Services Association on Monday, 30 April to inaugurate a computer training centre, opened through a grant from the Ambassador's Self Help Programme. This association, founded in 1947 by a group of social workers, received LE 33,390 from the Self-Help Programme to provide computer training for 350 students in the Bulaq community. With the grant, the Association bought 7 computers, 2 printers, software, educational CDs and books, and one air conditioner. The classes for beginners are free. The fee for advanced classes is LE 60 with a 50% discount for the Association's members.

The US Ambassador's Self-Help Programme is a special fund which has been set up to assist small, grassroots, and community-operated projects in Egypt. Over the past two years, the Ambassador's Self-Help Fund has provided funding for micro-credit loan programmes, vocational training and women's health and literacy programmes; The fund has contributed to mentally and physically challenged children's centres and purchased supplies and equipment for a carpentry workshop, washing machine repair workshop, and now the computer centre.
