Last-lap collapse

MCLAREN'S Mika Hakkinen suffered one of the cruelest blows in Formula One history when clutch failure on the final lap robbed him of a fourth consecutive win in the Spanish Grand Prix. World champion Michael Schumacher (photo), could hardly believe his luck as his Ferrari swept past the unhappy Finn, his car belching smoke, to claim a third win in five races this season. Hakkinen was leading by 42.5 seconds over Schumacher and seemed headed for his fourth straight victory in the Spanish GP when the nearly impossible happened. On the final and 65th lap, the Finn came to a dead stop and pulled over midway through the lap. "I'm very disappointed. Not so much sad as disappointed," Hakkinen said. "We don't know what went wrong. We think it might have been the clutch or hydraulics but the engineers still aren't sure." Hakkinen shrugged his shoulders as he climbed out of the car and waved to the crowd, which responded warmly. He then hitched a ride back to the McLaren garage and was embraced in the pit lane by Schumacher. Schumacher leads the drivers' championship with 36 points
