COMESA pledge
WRAPPING up their summit in Cairo yesterday, the 20 delegations of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) vowed closer cooperation among themselves to achieve economic integration. In its final communiqué, the sixth COMESA summit recommended that all its members join the Free Trade Area (FTA) agreement which was finalised last October and also that member states work on achieving a COMESA Customs Union by the year 2004.During the two-day summit which opened on Tuesday, Egypt took over from Mauritius the presidency of the group, and President Hosni Mubarak committed Egypt to increased cooperation, better coordination and closing COMESA ranks.
