PA consultant
ESSAM ABDEL-MONEIM, head of the Sports Section at the Al-Ahram daily newspaper and head of the Egyptian Sports Critics Association, has been chosen by the People's Assembly as its Youth Committee sports consultant. Abdel-Moneim was chosen for his vast experience in sports which, the PA said, could help in improving the committee's efforts.Handball sponsor
HASSAN MUSTAFA, head of the Egyptian and International Handball Federations, signed a LE2 million-plus deal with the Amiral Company under which the firm will sponsor the Egyptian handball national team for the next two years. The signing was attended by Hassan Hamdi, Al-Ahram's advertisement manager, Mahmoud El-Khatib, head of Al-Ahram's sports activity department, and Osama El-Sherif, head of Amiral.Drugs in cycling
GIRO D'ITALIA rider Dario Frigo was sacked by his Fassa Bortolo team Friday after illegal drugs were found during a police raid on his hotel room in San Remo, officials said.Manager Giancarlo Ferretti told reporters that the team had received an official notice from the police late Thursday that drugs had been found the previous evening.
"Dario admitted this and so, under the rules of the team, he was immediately sacked," Ferretti said. The 28-year-old Italian was standing second overall in the Giro, 15 seconds behind compatriot Gilberto Simoni after leading the race for nine days. His sacking means he will be unable to continue in the race.
Ferretti declined to specify which drugs had been found. The Italian news agency ANSA quoted police sources as saying substances including testosterone, caffeine, adrenal and anabolic steroids and other stimulants had been seized.
Friendly draw
EGYPT came from behind to tie Kenya 1-1 in a friendly soccer international match played in Nairobi on Sunday. Kenya opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Ahmed Salah Hosni levelled for Egypt in the 56th. The match was part of Egypt's preparations for an African Nations Cup qualifier against Cote D'Ivoire on Sunday in Abidjan and against Morocco in Rabat on 30 June in a crucial World Cup qualifier. Egypt has already been assured a spot in the African Nations Cup.
French triple
FRANCE added the only jewel missing in its crown with plenty of sparkle, if only a lone goal.France added the Confederations Cup to its world and European title Sunday, thanks to a Patrick Vieira header that was enough to beat Japan 1-0 in the tournament final in the Japanese city of Yokohama.
Only Brazil has clinched such a triple -- a world, continental and Confederations title at the same time -- when they achieved the feat in 1997.
Australia concluded its giant-killing Confederations Cup campaign by adding a 1-0 win over Brazil in the third-place playoff Saturday to its earlier upset of France.
