That time of the year
AT A MEETING of the Supreme Council for Culture on Saturday, Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni announced the state awards in literature, the arts and the social sciences.
Oweiss Mansour Abdel-Meguid El-Naqqash Abdel-Dayem Abu Senna
The Mubarak Award for literature (LE100,000) went to veteran writer Anis Mansour, but the same award was withheld in the arts and social sciences, because two candidates in each category (Samha El-Kholi and Ali Raafat in the arts, Ismail Sabri Abdalla and Atef Sedqi in the social sciences) received an equal number of votes.
State Merit Awards (LE50,000) went to a number of prominent names: poet Abdel-Rahman El- Abnoudi, veteran short-story writer Youssef El-Sharouni and literary critic Ragaa El-Naqqash (in literature); scholars Abdel-Salam Abdel-Ghaffar, Qadri Hanafi, Latifa Salem and Fouad Abu Hatab (in social sciences); and artists Hamed Oweiss, Hassan Heshmat and Mohamed Taha Hussein (in the arts).
State Distinction Awards (LE25,000) were withheld in the arts and partially withheld in literature. They went to poet Mohamed Ibrahim Abu Senna (in literature) and scholars Layla Abdel-Meguid and Mohamed Nour Farahat (in the social sciences).
As for the State Incentive Awards (LE10,000), they boast, as always, the greatest number of recipients: novelist Shehata El-Iryan, children's science fiction writer Gamal Asaker, poets Emad Ghazali and Abdel-Moniem El- Aqabi, literary scholar Mohamed El- Sheikh and translator Ali El-Sawi (in literature); flautist Inas Abdel-Dayem, painter Mohamed Abul-Naga, sculptor Salaheddin Hammad, architect Ali Mohamed El-Sawi and film set designer Adel El-Maghrabi, pottery artist Ayman Ali Gouda (in the arts); and, finally, scholars Sherif El- Labban and Ahmed Bekhit (in social, economic and legal sciences).
