Soad's legacy
![]()
I met Soad Hosni at the start of her career; she was starring in a film based on one of my novels. She was courteous and polite and had a remarkable sense of humour.
As an artist she proved profoundly sensitive, and when she played the lead in the film version of another of my novels -- it was Al- Tariq (The Road), I think -- I was quite astounded by her ability to play a serious role, convincingly impersonating a character of great tragic depth.
Up to this point, you see, I had only encountered her as a comedienne and she was marvelous.
I believe she was one of the most versatile actresses of her generation, and at a time when most others preferred to be typecast, playing the same role over and over. In Salah Abu Seif's Al- Qahira 1930 (based on another of my novels), Youssef Chahine's Al- Ikhtiyar (The Choice) and Hassan El-Imam's Amira Hobbi Ana (Amira, My Love), I collaborated with her as a scriptwriter, and my feelings were confirmed every time. She was not only excellent, she was profoundly and uniquely Egyptian, giving the characters she played an authentic and convincing flavour.
Based on an interview by Mohamed Salmawy.
