Woman's work

MRS SUZANNE MUBARAK, president of the National Council for Women (NCW), opened on Sunday the NCW's third intellectual forum entitled "Women and the job market/The formal and informal sectors" at the Conrad Hotel. Mrs Mubarak said the one- day forum follows a number of successful events organised by the NCW that have turned the council into a principal partner in the national dialogue on the country's future.

"The subject of women and the job market is not merely a technical issue or an analysis of figures and statistics. It is related to the development of the status of women and their role in society and the degree to which society can capitalise on the talents and potential of half its population," Mrs Mubarak said.

This comprehensive perception of women is the means of creating equal opportunities for members of a single society, Mrs Mubarak said, as well as giving them a chance to develop their creative abilities, which would not only advance society as a whole, but also give each member pride in their own personal achievement.

Mrs Mubarak stressed the importance of providing each woman willing to work the opportunity to do so. She also emphasised the need, as the country turns into a private- sector-oriented market economy, to uphold the principle of equal pay for equal work and women's right to participate in all economic fields as long as they possess the competence.

The NCW previously held one conference, "Women, citizenship and development" in March 2000, and two intellectual forums, "Women and the media" and "Women and political participation" in May and June 2000, respectively.
