*« The now restored Beit Al-Suheimi, located in Al-Darb Al- Asfar in the district of Al-Gamaliya, was the well chosen venue for an event organised by the Cultural Development Fund (CDF) headed by Salah Shaquir in honour of the colloquial poet Abdel-Rahman El-Abnoudi, who received this year's State Prize of Merit in literature. * Well, darlings, I have just heard that our columnist Zahi Hawass, director of the Giza Plateau and Bahariya Oasis, was singled out by the Geographic Society in Washington as one of the world's leading archaeologists. The celebration was attended by our ambassador to the United States Nabil Fahmi as well as 500 Americans connected to the political and cultural fields. The ambassador pointed out that through his archaeological findings Hawass has succeeded in informing laypeople in Europe, the United States and Japan about Egyptian antiquities. Among Hawass's most outstanding excavations were the Pyramid builders' cemeteries on the Giza Plateau and the valley of the golden mummies in Bahariya Oasis. And would you believe, a compact disc bearing Hawass's name and biography will be mounted on the Mars 2001 Lander, which, along with the Orbiter and Rover, will help in exploring the ancient highlands of Mars.

Khayrat will play a selection of his most sought-after compositions, such as Ghawayish, the Faten Hammama trilogy: Leilet Al- Qabd Ala Fatma, Damir Abla Hekmat and Wagh Al-Qamar, as well as 100 Years of Cinema, Zay Al-Hawa and Al-'Asifa.

* ª Cleverly timing her wedding to coincide with the anniversary of the French Revolution, our very dear colleague Mariz Tadros chose 14 July to tie the knot with Akram Habib, brilliant development expert, at St George Church in Giza. Mariz, who has been away the past year working on her PhD at Oxford, took our breath away as she walked down the aisle in dazzling white. Looking proud and happy were her family, particularly her father, former commercial counsellor in Beijing FikryTadros. From Al-AhramWeekly, Maurice Guindi and his wife Mary, Hani Shukralla, Gamal Nkruma, Faiza Rady and her dashing husband, Ted, Amira Howeidy, Fatemah Farag, Heba Samir, Nevine Khalil, Nier Abdou, Nigel Ryan, Sheriene Nasr, her husband Maher and son John and Youssef Rakha were all in attendance to give Mariz away. It was an occasion which drew Peter Snowdon from Belgium, Charles François from Paris and Ros Sales from London to Cairo. The happy couple is off to Italy on their honeymoon, where they will tour the cities of Rome, Venice and Florence.

* My dear friend Abdallah Kanafaoui, general manager of Royal Air Maroc in Egypt, recently held a cocktail reception at Le Méridien Heliopolis's Aramis ballroom. The event was attended by the Moroccan ambassador, HE Aly Oumlil, HE Saadeya El-Shazly, Moroccan councellor, and many members of the Moroccan community who were thrilled to see famous Moroccan singer Samira Said appear and join the gathering. The distinguished guests were welcomed by the charming Nihal Zamzam, marketing communication manager of the hotel.
