TO MARK THE BEGINNING of the golden jubilee year of the 23 July 1952 Revolution, over the next 12 months Al- Ahram Weekly will be running an occasional series chronicling the last days of the monarchy and mapping the events that led to the revolution and the emergence of the political forces that would direct the subsequent changes.

On 25 July, 1952 (main picture) it was Mohamed Naguib, leader of what was then called the Army Movement, and Ali Maher, appointed prime minister by the army officers, who occupied centre stage. Their time in the limelight was brief, though. The two men would soon disappear from the scene, their place taken by the officers who created the revolution and its legacy. Below, Nasser shakes hand with Hosni Mubarak, then a senior air force officer.
