Fruitfulness at Francophone Games

AT THE annual francophone gathering, the Egyptian delegation played strong, by Sunday ranking seventh with five medals: one gold, two silver, and two bronze. The event included Egypt's youth football team's quarterfinal run, after beating Mali 3-1.

Arab tennis glory

TENNIS may not be the nation's strongest betting point, but nevertheless, Egypt's junior boys and girls clinched the Arab Championship last week after they rallied strong on the clay courts of Zamalek's Gezira Sporting Club. The boys took gold after beating Tunisia 2-1, leaving Kuwait and Saudi Arabia ranking third. The girls claimed their glory after smashing Algeria 2-0.

Egypt squashes the rest of the world

YET ANOTHER squash event witnessed Egypt on top. Egypt's Omayma Abdel- Qawi took second place and the silver medal in the 9th World Squash Championship after losing a close final match to Malaysia's Nicole David, world No.1.

Abdel-Qawi lost to Nicol 3-0 in an unexpectedly quick last set; plagued by noticeable fatigue, Abdel-Qawi gave it away in 17 minutes.

A rowing success

IN A HISTORIC moment for Egypt's rowers, doubles duo Akram Abdel-Shafei and El-Bakri Yehia won the bronze medal in the World Rowing Championship in Germany last week. The event included 785 participants from 37 countries; competing in 24 events.

Special Olympics suggestions

PHYSICAL strength being the root of good performance, the MENA Regional Leadership Council (RLC) Committees discussed last week the importance of spreading accessible, up-to-date medical care to athletes around the Arab world -- an idea proposed by Magda Moussa, secretary-general of the RLC. The increase in the number of sports practiced by mentally disabled athletes, and their participation in events such as the Francophone, Mediterranean and African Games, were also discussed.

Media being key to the enhancement of disabled sports' popularity, Ali Al- Shawahin, head of the media committee, recognised the importance of honouring the Arab and Egyptian media people who helped shed light on such events -- a move which gave a push to the movement of Special Olympics in the MENA region.
