THINGS TO DO BY THE SEA (and elsewhere): August, and Cairo's bastions of culture join the rest of the city in slowly winding down, so much so that city life can suddenly come to seem as exciting as watching a balloon slowly deflate. Galleries close, or keep increasingly erratic hours, dedicating themselves mostly to far from inspiring group shows, a kind of end of line sale for the gallery's stable of artists who earlier in the season have had individual shows. The Opera House complex enters one of its sleepier phases and whatever theatre is available tends to be of the most crassly commercial type.

But August brings with it, too, the occasional bright spots. The Citadel Music Festival has become a major fixture of the month. Between 10-19 August it will once again be lighting up the Citadel. And for those for whom the trek might seem a little far, performances will be repeated at the Open Air space at the Opera House.
The Ismailia Folk Festival has also become a fixture of the month, and annually opens with a spectacular street carnival. And once again many of the troupes will travel to Cairo, where they are scheduled to perform at the Opera House between 25-29 August. Between the 20 and 28 August there is also the 7th Cairo International Festival of Song.
Alexandria, too, boasts a new performance space: the reconstructed Roman amphitheatre opened earlier this years with an ambitious monthly programme designed to attract those who do like to be beside the sea-side. The August programme runs as follows:
2/8, Omar Khayrat; 3/8, National Arabic Music Ensemble; 4/8, Nevine Allouba sings modern standards; 5/8, Ilham Al-Madfa'i performs traditional and contemporary Arabic music; 10/8, Abdel-Halim Nuweira Arabic Music Ensemble, with Ahmed El-Sonbati; 11/8, Banat El-Nil troupe and Anouchka; 12/8, Yehya Khalil Jazz Ensemble; 16/8, Iman El-Bahr Darwish and Uyun Misr Ensemble; 17/8, Abdel-Halim Nuweira Arabic Music Ensemble, with Mohamed Sarwat; 18/8, Edward and the Gypsies; 19/8, Sharqiyat Fathi Salama; 23/8, Cairo Opera Orchestra, conducted by Sherif Mohieddin, perform Omar Kharyat compositions with the composer on piano; 24/8, Abdel-Halim Nuweira Arabic Music Ensemble, with Fouad Zabadi; 25/8, Beit El-Oud; 26/8, Yehya Khalil Jazz Ensemble; 29/8, Cairo Opera Orchestra perform Yasser Abdel-Razek compositions; 30/8; Abdel-Halim Nuweira Arabic Music Ensemble with Ghada Ragab.
