 Al-Ahram celebrates its 125th anniversary this week. In the century and a quarter since first appearing, the organisation has grown to occupy a three-building office complex, runs several state-of-the-art printing presses both in and outside Cairo and currently publishes 14 titles alongside the original.
It is in the three buildings on Al-Galaa Street -- inaugurated in 1968 (right), 1992 (left) and 2001 (centre) -- that the production process begins. From Al-Galaa Street the stories that are the corner stone of any newspaper are sent to presses in Qalyub, north of Cairo, Al-Galaa in the downtown area and 6th October city, on the outskirts of the capital. Al-Ahram began its diversification 51 years ago, and now produces an array of weekly newspapers and magazines as well as more specialised periodicals covering areas as diverse as economy, youth, information technology and sports. Al-Ahram's titles include the two leading foreign-language weekly newspapers: Al-Ahram Weekly (in English) and Al-Ahram Hebdo (in French). |
