Sir -- I very much enjoyed Nur Elmessiri's review of Mohamed El- Bisatie's anthology of short stories entitled Mukhtarat ("In full view," Al-Ahram Weekly, 12-18 April 2001). However, I was surprised that the review did not mention any translated works of El-Bisatie, especially that some of the stories mentioned in the review are translated into English and included in the excellent anthology entitled A Last Glass of Tea and Other Stories, translated by Denys Johnson- Davies and published by AUC Press in 1994. It would be, I feel, of great benefit to your foreign reader who cannot read Arabic if whenever possible you could mention available English translations of the writers you review -- especially so in the case of creative writing.Adam Norris,

Memories of massacre
Sir -- I read with great interest David Tresilian's review of Elias Sanbar's Le Bien des absents (Absentees' Property) in the last issue of your Books Supplement ("Souvenirs of the land to come," Al-Ahram Weekly, 12-18 July 2001). It is indeed a very touching memoir of a life spent in the diaspora and in constant struggle.The publication of this book comes at a time when Palestinian existence is being severely challenged and when the Palestinian people are under continuous fire from their Israeli occupiers.
The books is also published as the Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon, is being tried in Belgium for his responsibility for the war crimes committed at the Sabra and Shatila massacres during the Israeli occupation of Beirut in 1982. It was therefore surprising that the review did not really deal with Sanbar's views on those massacres and his recollections of those turbulent times. In fact the only mention of the massacres came in the selected quotation concerning the writer's relationship with Jean Genet.
