MTF counts down
EGYPT is preparing for the second round of its annual tourist fair, the Mediterranean Travel Fair (MTF), which will take place from 24 to 26 September. The fair is organised by the Reed Travel Exhibition company in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, the Egyptian Tourist Authority (ETA), EgyptAir, hotels and travel agencies.
This year, the fair will be held under the auspices of Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, who will inaugurate the event. Tourism is one of the main sources of national income.
So far, 26 countries have confirmed that they will take part in the event and another 10 are expected to join in. About 85 per cent of the exhibition space at the Cairo International Conference Centre is already booked.
MTF officials say about 200 travel agencies will be invited by the ETA and EgyptAir to attend the event. Also attending will be another 200 American companies specialising in incentive tourism.
Other Arab countries showing an interest in the fair are Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Libya, Sudan, Yemen and Qatar.
In the first round of the fair, held last year, 167 exhibitors representing 25 countries had stands at the event. These included four Arab countries and 16 international tourist authorities -- Spain, Switzerland, China, Jordan, Palestine, Cyprus, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Morocco, Libya, Tunisia, Turkey, Bahrain and Russia.
Curative tourism
A SYMPOSIUM on curative and environmental tourism will take place in Cairo in September on the fringe of the Mediterranean Travel Fair.
Minister of Tourism Mamdouh El-Beltagui recently declared that there should be full coordination between the ministries of tourism and health in issuing a report on Egypt's natural facilities for curative tourism. El-Beltagui also asked hotels and tourist establishments dealing with this type of tourism to adopt a comprehensive marketing strategy for this important product. He also asked officials of the Egyptian Tourist Authority (ETA) together with the Tourist Development Authority (TDA) to issue booklets in various languages on curative tourism venues in Egypt. The report is scheduled to include a list of ailments that could be treated in Egypt, methods of treatment, the accessibility and facilities of the establishments where patients will be treated, information desks in the area, tourist offices, accommodation and entertainment spots.
