Pack of Cards* Well, dears, I never know what novel and interesting idea our esteemed paper will come up with. To commemorate its 125th anniversary, Al-Ahram decided to organise a unique cultural festival; to this end, an exhibition comprising 600 rare historical photos was set up, reflecting Egyptian life during the past 125 years with all its ordeals, wars, sacrifices and struggles as well as its incomparable moments of shared joy. These photos are historical documents depicting such milestones as work on the Suez Canal, nationalist demonstrations led by Ahmed Urabi, Saad Zaghlul and Mustafa Kamel, and events of the July 1952 Revolution. Placed under the auspices of Mrs Suzanne Mubarak, the exhibition will last until 9 September at the Giza Pyramids. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, Minister of Information Safwat El-Sherif, Minister of Higher Education and State Minister for Scientific Research Mufid Shehab, and Al-Ahram Editor-in-Chief and Chairman of the Board Ibrahim Nafie, among other luminaries. The festival also includes a book fair organised in cooperation between Minister of Youth Aliyeddin Hilal and the Al-Ahram Organisation. Thanks to the combined efforts of Al-Ahram Organisation and the ministries concerned, discounts reached 75 per cent on all books. At such attractive prices, Egypt's young people will certainly be encouraged to read more about their country's history, society and politics. |
