CAIRO International Film Festival celebrates its silver jubilee this year. Festival director Hussein Fahmi is busy putting the finishing touches to the upcoming event, scheduled to start on 9 October and end on the 20th. In a press conference held last Thursday at Cairo's Royal Meridien Hotel, Fahmi let some of the festival's surprises out. Thirty-five countries are due to participate this time around, including first timer Burkina Faso. Out of 121 films to be shown, 20 will be in the official international competition. Unfortunately, at least until Thursday, the only Egyptian film participating in the official competition is director Inas El-Deghedi's Mudhakarrat Murahiqa (A Teenage Girl's Diary).
Fahmi is holding on tight to the names of the jury. Even though he announced that actress Lebleba and director Samir Seif will be on the jury he refused to divulge any of the names of the foreign jury members saying he will announce them only three days prior to the opening ceremony.
One secret he did let out though is that this year the Cairo International Film Festival's guests of honour will include Kate Winslett, of Titanic fame, as well as Danny Glover and Jeremy Irons.
