The year-old, multi-media event, initially christened "It's Happening in the Garage," hosted a number of important performances and workshops last year. Organised by Tareq Aboul-Fetouh's Young Arab Theatre Fund, an independenty run, networking oriented organisation, it aims to bring Arab and other artists together in the context of an ongoing and synergetic exchange. This year, it was thought, the selected performances would be spread out over a longer period in an attempt to make these cultural activities an ongoing part of the city's life.
Of the performers who graced the Jesuits refurbished garage the Palestinian singer Kamilya Jubran perhaps deserves special mention. A central member of the celebrated Palestinian band Sabrin (having performed their vocals since they came into being), Jubran is also an oud virtuoso and an independent music historian.
To the accompaniment of the oud, she performed on two consecutive nights last Wednesday and Thursday, having been introduced on the first night by the famous vernacular poet Sayed Hegab, whose lyrics are featured on Sabrin's latest album, 'Ala Fien (Where to).
Jubran presented the results of her highly eclectic research, providing her own individual interpretations of a number of forgotten and little known, mostly Egyptian classic songs from the 19th and the early 20th century, and finishing with two songs from the new album.
Jubran, who flew in from Jerusalem on Tuesday, was obliged to leave immediately to meet professional obligations.
