Links of history: Tomorrow, 28 September, the Arab world will commemorate two events: the Palestinian people's uprising, one year ago, against Israeli occupation, and the passing, 31 years ago, of Egyptian President Gamal Abdel-Nasser.
The coincidence is heavy with symbolism: it brings to the fore Egypt's inextricable link to Palestine, the crucial space the Palestinian cause occupies in Arab hearts and minds and the tenacity of the Arabs' yearning for liberation, despite the hesitation, mistakes and defeats that have marked the road to freedom.
This picture was taken at the 1970 Cairo summit held after the events of "Black September" -- the Jordanian government's bloody bid to eliminate the Palestinian armed resistance on its soil. Here, Palestinians and Jordanians negotiated a truce through the mediation efforts of Abdel-Nasser, who died almost immediately after.
