Lone survivor

Weekend matches, writes Nashwa Abdel-Tawab, swept away two out of the three Egyptian clubs playing in African tournaments

Until last week, Egypt was represented by three teams in various African club competitions. But two fell by the wayside, leaving just one showing the way.

Zamalek, Africain Cup Winners Cup holders, crashed out of the competition after a 3-1 quarter- final loss to Club Africain in Tunisia. Africain qualified 3-2 on aggregate and will tackle Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa next month for a place in the two-leg final.

A see-saw second leg at the Al-Menzah Stadium in Tunis turned decisively in favour of Africain, the 1990 and 1999 Cup Winners Cup runners-up, with just four minutes left when leading scorer Amdi Marzouki snatched the third goal.

Rhimi had put the Tunisian club, who won the more prestigious Africain Champions Cup 10 years ago, ahead on the stroke of half-time only for Hazem Imam to level after 50 minutes.

Another goal from Rhimi two minutes later brought Africain back to within striking distance, but Zamalek remained ahead on the away-goal rule until Marzouki struck his third goal in six Cup Winners Cup games.

In the same tournament, Ismaili's 1-1 draw with Kaizer Chiefs was enough to send the South African side to the semi- final. The first leg in Johannesburg had ended in a scoreless draw.

Ismaili drew first blood from a penalty kick by Abdel-Hamid Bassiouni but Arthur Zwani levelled the score when his shot was deflected into the goal with only 15 minutes to go.

Ahli, the sole Egyptian squad still standing in Africa, cruised to a 2-1 victory over Ivorian side ASEC in Group B of the African Champions League. On Friday in Cairo Stadium, goals from Wael Gomaa and Alaa Ibrahim gave the Egyptian giants the lead in the group with nine points. The defeat dealt a crushing blow to ASEC's hopes of reaching the semi-final stage as the 1998 champion has only four points with two games left.
