THE 25th ROUND of the Cairo International Film Festival (9-20 October) opened on Tuesday with Jean-Pierre Jeunet's La Fabuleaux Destin D'Amelie Poulan. Held despite international upheavals, the festival will show 167 films from 44 countries. Only one Egyptian film is participating in the official competition, Inas El-Dighiedi's Memos of a Teenager, though outside the competition Arab highlights include Raafat El-Mihi's Apple and Rashid Mashharawi's Curfew.
Honoured are the filmmakers Tawfik Saleh (Egypt), Abbas Kiarostami (Iran), Jean-Paul Rappeneau (France), Mauro Bolognini (Italy), Egyptian actress Fairuz and American actor Danny Glover. Kiarostami also heads the jury. Right, he receives his award fron the Minister of Culture at Tuesday's opening ceremony.
