The harvest
Few could have envied then vice-President Hosni Mubarak as he donned the mantle of the Egyptian head of state 20 years ago. President Sadat had been assassinated by Islamist militants, an attempted Islamist inserruction had just been foiled, regionally and domestically the country was embroiled in profound political and economic crisis: 1000 top political and religious leaders were in prison; political pluralism had been effectively suspended; Egypt was boycotted by the rest of the Arab nation; the economy and infrastructure were in shambles; and Israel had yet to complete its withdrawal from a significant part of the Sinai Peninsula. Below and on following pages, Al-Ahram Weekly assesses the 20-year harvest and tries to capture some of the salient features of Mubarak's style of leadership |
