By women for women

MRS SUZANNE MUBARAK, head of the National Council for Women (NCW), met on Sunday with Mustafa Abdel-Qader, minister of local development, and city and provincial governors to discuss future NCW activities and the role of the council's branches in the various governorates.

Mrs Mubarak said the meeting -- held at the NCW's Cairo headquarters -- aimed at familiarising governors with the council's vision for the future and discussing issues related to the roles of the council's branches as well as those of governors in ensuring the NCW's success.

"Improving women's conditions and moving women forward into the age in which we live, with all its tremendous developments and great achievements, necessitate full cooperation between ministries and authorities concerned with women's issues," Mrs Mubarak stressed.

This coordination, which entails streamlining relations between ministries on women's issues and offering views on priorities and future visions for women should be the primary responsibility of the NCW and its branches, Mrs Mubarak said.

"The council's branches were established as national mechanisms to coordinate between all parties concerned with women's rights in the nation's governorates," she said.

Mrs Mubarak made clear that the branches were not executive bodies, but rather reservoirs of ideas and centres for initiatives to develop the studies made by various authorities. Through the participation of women and by capitalising on the fruits of their efforts, the branches are also expected to raise the quality of services provided to women, she said.
