It was exhilarating to participate in celebrations marking the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. I thoroughly enjoyed the event. The new tall and dashing Chinese Ambassador Liu Xiaoming, and his exquisitely beautiful and gracious wife, officiated over the festivities. The food was simply divine once again corroborating the fact that the grand tradition of the Imperial Mandarin cuisine of the Middle Kingdom is unequalled and has survived the ravishes of the Cultural Revolution. I noted with pride and joy the warm friendship between the Chinese hosts and their Egyptian guests which confirms the long-standing traditional solidarity between Egypt and its great and old friend China. Among the distinguished guests were several ministers including the Minister of Agriculture Youssef Wali and Minister of Tourism Mamdouh El- Beltagi

At the American University in Cairo's Sony Gallery, a photography exhibition on "El-Minya: A Cradle of Egyptian Spirituality" by the official photographer of the Ministry of Information Ahmed El- Maghraby will be on show from 22 October until 8 November. The exhibition will comprise thirty six of his colour photographs of the sites and people of Minya. Of course dears I do not need to remind you that Minya is a city blessed with a rich spiritual heritage and great natural beauty. Antiquities of the Pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic, Islamic civilisations are to be found all over the place. El-Ashmunin, Tuna Al-Gabal, the Virgin Mary's Monastery, Zawiyet El- Mayitin and the mosques of El-Amrawy and Ubada Ibn El-Samet are but a few of the sites that are highly recommended. But if you feel that you prefer to stay around Cairo, then the next best thing of course is to the Sony Gallery |
