El-Nachar dreamed of a place where his works would be on permanent display for the public as well as budding artists to contemplate. Unfortunately, he passed away before seeing his dream come true, but his devoted wife Zeinab and daughter Eman have just realised his wish. |

I am sure that most of you have noticed the photographs of our dear colleague Khaled El-Fiqi, one of the most gifted photographers of his generation. Khaled is in the habit of collecting prizes for his handiwork, and it therefore came as no surprise to find that he had done it again. This time, he has won an honorable mention in the Nikon Corporation competition NPCI 2000-2001. The picture that won the award was published in the Weekly not long ago.

My dear friend Shirley Shalabi, whose calling in life is to teach young people how to behave properly in society, has just collected all her good advice in the form of a book in Arabic, Fann Al-Etiquette (The Art of Etiquette). The manuscript caught the interest of our colleague Hani Tolba, general manager of Al-Ahram Distribution Agency, who promptly decided to have it published. To launch the event, Shirley is inviting all her friends and students to a cocktail reception followed by a reading session at the Cairo Capital Club's Le Conservatoire Room. As a girl, I had to parade up and down stairs with books on my head; I gained intimate knowledge of which piece of cutlery to use on what food item, and what to discuss while dissecting my dinner. Now my charming younger friends, whose joie de vivre could never quite make up for their rough-and-ready way with a fish knife, truly have no excuse.

Sobhi Nabil Sobhi, the son of my very dear friend Farida Mansour, public relations manager of the Nile Hilton, last week wed the lovely Christine Wahib Doss at St Mark's Coptic Church in Heliopolis. The handsome groom, a mechanical engineering graduate of the AUC, is working with the Egyptian Coastal Construction Company on the Soma Bay project, and the gorgeous bride is a graduate of Cairo University's Faculty of Commerce. An elegant reception followed in the famous Nile Hilton Alf Leila Ballroom. The guests were entertained by Daoud, whose beautiful voice defies description, and who came especially from Hurghada to sing at the wedding; famous DJ Hani Wahba also helped make the night truly memorable. The waiters wore replicas of the uniforms they had donned for the opening of the hotel in 1959, and bore aloft blazing torches as they escorted the happy couple to cut the cake.

The lovely Miriam Wafik Ibrahim, who is also an AUC graduate now working as a consultant for Booz Allan and Hamilton Company, was recently engaged to dentist Dr Emad Zaher Tawfik. The intimate ceremony took place at Le Palais, one of Le Pasha's distinguished restaurants. Miriam is the daughter of Engineer Wafik Ibrahim and his charming wife Christiane Ratl.
The Colombian ambassador to Cairo, Jaime Girón Duarte, and the director of the Cervantes Institute (Spanish Cultural Centre), Antonio Gil de Carrasco, will soon be launching Colombian Cultural Week, to be held at the centre in Doqqi from 11 till 15 November. Those who are dying to find out more about Colombian culture and civilisation can sink their teeth into any one of several items, or even attend all of them -- for instance, a lecture by the Colombian novelist Laura Restrepo, and the screening of Colombian films Aguilas No Cazan Moscas (Eagles Don't Catch Flies) and La Estrategia del Caracol (The Strategy of Coral) directed by Sergio Cabrera. They will be able to sink their teeth into something else, too, since the most popular Colombian food will be served, to the sweet strains of music conducted by maestro Dar’o Robayo. |
