TO MARK International Education week the Fulbright Commission in Egypt staged a small concert at its Garden City headquarters showcasing two grantees, the violinist Yasser El-Serafi, and soprano Dalia Farouk. The latter, accompanied by pianist David Hales, sang a strangely eclectic mixture of songs, ranging from settings of Elizabethan poetry to Gershwin, taking in, along the way, that ultimate oomph show-stopper, Hey Big Spender, from the musical Sweet Charity, and set, of course, in a brothel. Wael Farouk was also included in the programme, giving a remarkably percussive rendering of, among other things, Liszt's Dream of Love, no 3.
