The exiled king has empty eyes. Is it the sadness of three decades spent far from his homeland that has hollowed them out, the horrors so many wars have brought to Afghanistan, or the twilight ahead -- the bleak future to which the present has already laid waste? What does he see, as he gazes out upon desolate landscapes, or inward, at depths no one can fathom?
