As I whispered to my colleague Reham El- Adawi, Mustafa El-Feki, chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations at the People's Assembly, spoke masterfully at the AUC's Oriental Hall, as he addressed the guests to the university's annual Iftar. He was the guest of honour, and the topic with which he chose to regale his listeners was "Media: Shaping the image of Egyptians and Arabs." El-Feki discussed several related issues, such as cultural and religious clashes between the European and Arab world and new means of combating terrorism in the wake of the 11 September attacks.
Many media personalities attended the Iftar, among whom I particularly noticed the editor-in- chief of Al-Ahram's quarterly magazine Al-Siyasa Al-Dawlia (International Politics), Osama El- Ghazali Harb; our very own columnist of "Plain Talk" fame, Mursi Saad El-Din; the editor-in- chief of Al-Ahram interiors magazine Al-Beit , Silvia El-Naqadi; the head of the Radio and TV Union, Hassan Hamid; AUC's provost and acting president, Tim Sullivan; AUC's director of public relations, Nagwa Shoeb; AUC media officer Nehal Tamraz; veteran journalist Louis Greiss; and Al-Ahram head of the presidential correspondents department Afkar El-Kharadli -- to name but a few. The annual Iftar is part of the social and charitable activities the American University in Cairo organises during Ramadan.

ª Last Friday was a special day, for it was marked by the annual Volunteers in Action (VIA) festival. Music and a puppet show followed the Iftar that gathered 290 orphans in the AUC's Greek Campus. Among celebrities participating in the event were budding actors Ahmed El-Fishawi, Amr Waked and Sherif Ramzi; actress Hala Sedqi; and actor/singer Majed El-Masri, who sang his first children's song, created specially for this event. Footballers Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan, the star twins of Zamalek Club, also attended the festival.

My dear friend and renowned architect Gamal Bakry is celebrating... well, many years of architectural accomplishment, and on 10 December an unusual exhibition will be opened at Al- Hanager on the Opera House grounds by Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni. This will last for 10 days. Guests will be received by Hoda Wasfi, the dynamic director of Al-Hanager Art Centre, and the enchanting Dalila El-Kerdani, who is a talented architect in her own right as well as Gamal's wife.
« On the occasion of Romania's National Day, celebrated on 1 December, and the anniversary of the Romanian Revolution, which will be celebrated on 22 December, my dear friend Ambassador of Romania Constantin Tunsano and his charming wife are hosting an exclusive reception on 18 December, which will certainly be attended by many diplomats, officials and other very important people.

Did you know, dears, that MobiNil participated in sponsoring a festival held last month at the Cairo Stadium? The funds will go toward the construction of a large state-of-the-art hospital for children afflicted with cancer. The festival was attended by senior state officials: Head of the People's Assembly Fathi Sorour, Minister of Youth and Sports Aliyeddin Hilal, Minister of Communications Ahmed Nazif and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Mufid Shehab, who all participated in a marathon titled Run Today, Build Tomorrow. Engineer Osman Sultan, the executive director of MobiNil, said the company is aware of its social role and responsibilities as a mega company in the field of communications. The hospital, 57357, is the first cancer hospital that will be built entirely with donations from individuals and various private organisations.

With Christmas around the corner, a beautiful concert is just the ticket, so remember that great music will be playing at the Cairo Opera House's Main Hall on 8 December. The Cairo Symphony Orchestra, led by Ahmed El-Saedi, will feature a Christmas celebration, along with the A Cappella Choir, conducted by Maya Gvineria. The orchestra will play Handel's Messiah, introducing soprano Iman Mustafa and tenor George Wanis. There is more: on 12 December, another Christmas concert, conducted by Nayer Nagui and directed by Abdallah Saad, will comprise a selection of well-known Christmas carols such as Joy to the World, Vergin Tutto Amor and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. It features sopranos Tahiya Shamseddin, Neveen Allouba, Iman Mustafa, tenor Sobhi Bedeir, and others. |
