Shortly before the sun set in the clear Abu Simbel sky on Sunday, President Hosni Mubarak inaugurated sections of the Ramses II and Nefertari temples, recently upgraded to facilitate the reception of tourists. The Ministry of Culture has been working for the past six years, in cooperation with UNESCO, and at a cost of LE 8 million, to develop the temples, installing security systems, building a visitors' information centre, kiosks for souvenir vendors, and constructing shaded visitors' paths.
The president, Mrs Suzanne Mubarak and an entourage of dignitaries were among those to watch the first sound and light show at Abu Simbel, which makes use of state-of-the-art technology, including computer simulations, to tell the history of the place and era in which it was built. In the new, extravagant staging, the faces of the temples are transformed into massive projection screens, while the audience listens on headphones to the narration, orated simultaneously in seven languages.
